How to Wear Pukhraj (Yellow Sapphire) — Vedic Wearing Guide

Jupiter's stone of wisdom, wealth, and marital harmony

Pukhraj — Yellow Sapphire — is the gentlest of the Navratna gems. Where Neelam (Saturn) can shake your life within hours, Pukhraj (Jupiter) works slowly, steadily, like a teacher building a student over years. It is the safest of the major gems and the one most often recommended to first-time wearers.

Who should wear Pukhraj?

In Vedic tradition, Pukhraj is the principal stone for Jupiter (Brihaspati) and is recommended for:

  • Dhanu (Sagittarius) — Jupiter is the lord; Pukhraj is the primary stone.
  • Meen (Pisces) — Jupiter co-rules; Pukhraj amplifies Pisces's intuition and wisdom.
  • Kark (Cancer) — Jupiter is exalted; Pukhraj supports family and education.

Many astrologers also prescribe Pukhraj to unmarried women seeking a good husband (Jupiter is the karaka, or significator, of marriage for women) and to students before exams.

Best day to wear Pukhraj

Thursday — Jupiter's day. Wear during sunrise on a Thursday in Shukla Paksha (waxing moon). Avoid: eclipse days, Amavasya, and Jupiter's combust periods.

Which finger?

Pukhraj is worn on the index finger (Jupiter finger) of the working hand. In Vedic palmistry, the index finger is governed by Jupiter — the stone channels through the matching nadi.

Metal: gold

Always gold for Pukhraj. Gold is Jupiter's metal in Vedic tradition. Silver is acceptable as a secondary, but the full benefit comes from gold. Panchdhatu (5-metal alloy) is the budget alternative.

Recommended weight

Standard formula: 1 ratti per 12 kg of body weight. A 60kg person wears around 5 ratti (≈4.5 carats). Pukhraj is forgiving — slightly over or under the calculated weight doesn't destabilize the chart the way Neelam can.

Energization mantra

Wash the ring in raw milk, then Ganga jal, then place on a yellow cloth. Recite Jupiter's mantra 108 times before sunrise on a Thursday:

ॐ बृं बृहस्पतये नमः
Oṁ Bṛṁ Bṛhaspataye Namaḥ
"Salutations to Brihaspati, teacher of the gods"

Some traditions prescribe a longer 108-repetition of the Guru beej mantra — both are valid; pick what feels authentic.

Expected effects (traditional)

  • Improved decision-making and judgment
  • Growth in education, teaching, and counseling work
  • Marriage prospects for unmarried women (Jupiter as marriage karaka)
  • Reduced financial stress and steadier wealth flow
  • Better digestion (Jupiter governs the liver in Ayurvedic mapping)

Effects build gradually — most wearers report noticeable changes within 3–6 months, not days.

When NOT to wear Pukhraj

  • If your chart has Jupiter as a strong functional malefic (rare — needs an astrologer's review).
  • During Guru's combust period.
  • Alongside Hessonite (Gomed) for Rahu — these planets are enemies in Vedic mapping.

Care

Clean weekly with raw milk or warm water and mild soap. Re-energize on Guru Pushya Nakshatra (the most auspicious window for Jupiter). Avoid wearing while bathing in chlorinated pools.
